Salmon - The 5 Species

Pictures and Descriptions of the five Pacific salmon species.

The Chinook (king) salmon is the prize catch in Alaska for sport anglers. HiTime Charters specifically targets the king while salmon fishing. In the waters of the Inside Passage of Alaska the average size is 12 to 18 pounds. Fish in the 35 to 40 pound range are not uncommon. The largest recorded king salmon caught on sport fishing gear in Alaska is 97 pounds. The largest recorded commercially harvested king in Alaska is 126 pounds. Coho (silver) and pink (humpy) salmon are also commonly caught on sport tackle. When the silvers are running they can provide a very exciting day of fishing. Silvers generally run in the 8 to 12 pound range but can be in excess 20 pounds. The other two Pacific salmon species, sockeye (red) and chum (dog) salmon, are not commonly caught on sportfishing gear they are however, very important to the commercial fishing industry.

The following pictures are a few examples of salmon caught by guests of Captain Wisner. They depict the normal size range of the king salmon caught in Alaska's Inside Passage.
